A large, fuzzy antlered buck and several does are pacing around the perimeter of our one year old deer fence, trying to find a way in. The freshly planted pumpkin hugelkulture beds must be so tempting for them. They are barely distracted by the dogs. We’re on high alert for a breach of the perimeter, which is our only line of defence. My new evening ritual is to take a break and “stand guard” (with a glass of blackberry port) and a slingshot by my side.
